Timing is half the trip

Book the right season.

The same itinerary in the wrong month is a different trip. Here’s when each region sails at its best — and how far ahead the good cabins go.

Wave season, explained: January through March is the cruise industry’s big sale season — the highest volume of promotions, onboard-credit offers, and fare drops of the year. If you know where you want to go, booking during wave season is the closest thing cruising has to a cheat code. Ask us what’s running right now.

Region by region

When to sail, where.

Region Best months Book ahead Worth knowing
Caribbean December – April 6–9 months Hurricane season runs June–November; shoulder months mean lower fares and thinner crowds.
Alaska June – August 9–12 months A short season — May and September sail cheaper but cooler. Balcony cabins sell first.
Mediterranean May – June, September 6–9 months July–August brings peak heat and peak crowds; the shoulder months are the connoisseur’s pick.
Northern Europe June – August 9–12 months Fjords and the Baltic share one short summer. Midnight sun sailings in June sell out early.
Transatlantic April – May, September – October 6–12 months Repositioning sailings between seasons: long crossings at the year’s lowest per-day fares.
South Pacific May – October 9–12 months Dry season in French Polynesia and Fiji. Limited departures — book the moment you decide.
Northern Lights November – February 9–12 months Aurora viewing needs dark skies — Arctic Norway and Iceland. No guarantees, but the odds are honest in these months.
Antarctica December – February 12+ months The austral summer is the only season. Expedition ships are small and sell out a year out — plan accordingly.

Late booking isn’t hopeless — guarantee cabins (where the line picks your room) and last-minute fare drops exist. What you lose is choice: the best-located cabins and suites go first. Tell us your dates and we’ll tell you what’s actually left, honestly.

Sometimes. If a sailing isn’t selling well, fares can drop closer to departure — and if you booked early at a higher fare, most lines will honor a price adjustment before final payment. That’s one of the things we watch for you: book early for choice, and we keep an eye on the fare afterward.
